Marco Pantani, Italy’s most celebrated cyclist of recent years,
died alone on Valentine’s Day in a hotel called The Rose, just
one month after his 34th birthday due to a massive overdose of cocaine.
It was a sad and shocking ending for this great champion who had
reached the highest levels of athletic achievement in 1998 when he won
the Tour de France and the Tour of Italy in the same year, an
achievement only equaled by some of the greatest names in cycle racing.
Pantani also twice defeated Lance Armstrong in mountaintop stages of
the 2000 Tour de France. He scared the previous Tour winner with his
relentless attacking style.1999 Tour Champion Lance Armstrong was
stunned by his remarkable comeback which had yet again seen Pantani
rise from life-threatening injuries and drug scandals to the heights of
success yet again, alas not for long. However the dark side of his
comeback didn’t come to light until much later. The accusations of
cheating, although unproven but very possibly justified , had a
profound effect on his career and his mental stability.
But in all honesty, as today, it was just a sign of our times.
Pantani’s position as far as doping was concerned , was the same
as many others at the time and even now : "Keep a level playing field".
But when Pantani like a lot of other champions got involved in the drug
culture of professional athletics the final result was to be the
undoing of him .It was to become the beginning of the end . However,
perhaps more relevantly, after he embraced a lot of today’s
societies unfortunate absorption with ‘ recreational drugs
’, he plummeted from the heights of stardom to the utter depths
of depression. and finally death.
Now, for the first time, the full story of Pantani’s sparkling
career and terrible fall is told, including an intimate
interview—never before published in English—with
Pantani’s girlfriend, Christina Jonsson, on the Italian
star’s tragic final days.
In Marco Pantani: "The Legend of a Tragic Champion", editor John
Wilcockson has compiled a memorable selection of contemporary articles,
written by leading American and European sportswriters that creates a
fitting tribute to one of cyclings brightest, saddest and most

JUST IN: PATRICK SERCU THE MYSTERY. (DUTCH): The great Belgian writer
& journalist Rik Vanwalleghem has produced a warm and very candid
portrait of possibly the Worlds best ever track cyclist Patrick Sercu
,the son of former a fine professional road star Berten (Albert) Sercu.
Patrick won an Olympic gold medal in TOKYO 1964 (KILO) ,after winning
the World Sprint Championship the year before and the record of 88
Six-Day race victories . However Sercu also shined very brightly on the
road .He won 13 stages in the Giro and wrote history in the Tour de
France of 1974 by winning 3 stages and the Green Jersey. Not bad for a
rider who initially made his name as a track sprinter.
This wonderful book has two main parts. Part one that explains and
explores the racing side of his fantastic career. The second paints a
more intimate picture of his soul and the mind that produced such a
great champion. However this irrelevant , (At the moment) if you cannot
